Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of social and economic capital on urban identity. Urban identity is a relatively new concept which has got the attention of architecture experts, urban planners, anthropologists, environmental psychologists, urban sociologists, and etc. and its importance has been increasing every day. This research inspired by Lalli’s work (1992) which tried to build a five-item scale of urban identity. The method of this research was survey and the tool for collecting data was questionnaire. The population of the research involved all the above 15 years old citizens of Tabriz, Iran of which 516 were selected by multi-stage cluster sampling method and Cochran formula as the sample. The city of Tabriz is divided into ten municipal districts in terms of division. Therefore, sampling was conducted among these ten regions by considering the population of each municipal district. The results showed that urban identity had greater degree among the citizens of Tabriz, Iran. Besides, based on inferential results of the research, social capital construction had a significant correlation (r=.37) with urban identity. Furthermore, the participation dimension of social capital had the highest correlation coefficient with the dependent variable. In the other words, the level of urban identity can grow up provided that the citizens’ social participation increases too. Along with, economic capital had a significant correlation (r=.14) with urban identity. In addition to, the results of regression analysis showed a significant relationship between social capital and economic capital with urban identity and these variables could explain 15.5 percent of the variance of dependent variable, urban identity, and the rest of the variance was explained by other factors which are not mentioned in this paper.
