ANALYSIS OF THERMO MECHANICAL FATIGUE PHENOMENON

Abstract


This study is devoted to fatigue phenomena occurring in structures under interacting thermal and mechanical loadings that are simultaneously applied. Aim: The aim of investigation in this field is to predict crack growth in order to assess life of structural parts when they are subjected to this kind of loading. Emphasis is done for cyclic thermo mechanical loadings which can appear in avionic parts. The cyclic loadings investigated are according either to the in-phase coupling configuration or to the out-of-phase one. Materials and methods: Analysis of crack growth resulting form thermal and elastic plastic strains interaction at the crack tip is performed by using a finite element model constructed under Abaqus package. The CT16 specimen is considered for this purpose and special care was given to mesh refinement that guarantees convergence requirements. Results: A parametric study has been conducted for thermomechanical loadings in phase and out-of-phase. Conclusion.: One could notice that, for the in-phase protocol of loading, the level of plastic deformation, at the crack tip, is higher stress concentration when compared with the results of tests carried out with maintaining the same amplitude of mechanical deformation but according to an out-of-phase protocol. This allows finding by numerical modelling some experimental results that were previously stated.
