Psychological Mechanisms of Destructive Influence of Mass Media on the Formation of Nationalistic Attitudes in the Youth Environment

Abstract


The urgency of the study problem is caused by the aggravation of the geopolitical situation in the world, on the one hand, and, on the other, the insufficient level of scientific knowledge about the psychological mechanisms of the media influence on the national consciousness of modern youth, the influence of the media on the spread of nationalistic sentiments among the youth. The purpose of the study is to identify the dynamics of the ethno-nationalistic sentiments of Russian and Ukrainian youth over the past 13 years, due to the influence of the media. The main method of study is the cross sections method with the use of both questionnaire methods and methods of psychological diagnosis. The study was carried out from 2004 to 2017 in the leading universities of Russia and Ukraine. In total, 1000 Ukrainian and Russian students aged 20 to 22 years old - spectators of news and political television programs of the central television channels of Ukraine and Russia took part in the study. The dynamics of ethno-nationalistic sentiments in the youth environment of the two countries is revealed, revealing the psychological mechanisms of the patriotic attitudes transformation into nationalist ones under the influence of the information-psychological manipulation process of the mass consciousness. The materials of the study make it possible to disclose the psychological nature of nationalism as a form of mass consciousness, to determine the psychological mechanisms for the emergence and spread of nationalistic sentiments in the youth environment.
