Effect of Paternal age on the sperm parameters, Oxidative markers and Leptin of infertile males

Abstract


Background: Advance of paternal and maternal age is important factor may affecting on fertility. This study sought to revealed the association between increase men age and semen parameters as well as oxidative markers and leptin hormone of infertile males.

Materials and methods: A total of 81 infertile male who attained the clinic of Fertility Center, Al-Najaf – Iraq, throughout a period from January 2017 to October 2017. These were divided into three  age groups: Less than 30 years (n = 20), 30 – 40 years (n = 42) and more than 40 years (n = 19). Evaluation of all semen parameters were done according to WHO standard criteria (1999). After semen analysis, concentration of oxidative markers and Leptin in seminal plasma of all groups were measured by ELISA.

Results: The study revealed that as patients age increase, there was a significant reduction sperm concentration, progressive sperm motility percent and normal sperm morphology percent (p < 0.05). However, no change in semen volume was noted. In addition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and body mass index (BMI) were a significant increase with advance paternal age (p < 0.05). A trend was observed for Lower antioxidant (glutathione, catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD)) and Leptin concentration in seminal plasma (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: the study results demonstrated the negative influence of increasing patients age on semen parameters, oxidative stress markers and leptin hormone; and the possible role of patients age in a etiology of male infertility, also may reduce the chances of pregnancy as men become progressively less fertile with age.
