An Empirical Study on the Effects of Environmental Uncertainty on Relational Governance : Comparative Analysis about Non-Competitive Alliances and Competitive Alliances in the Construction Industry

Abstract


It is one of the focus of strategic management research that the influence of environmental uncertainty (EU) on relational governance (RG) in the construction industry. In this paper, EU included three dimensions according to the relevant literature, and this empirical study conducted on the effects of three different dimensions of EU on RG in the conditions of non-competitive alliances (NCA) and competitive alliances (CA) of the construction industry. The results showed that the effect of three different dimensions of EU on RG differs because of different alliance types. For the NCA, market uncertainty (MU) and competitive intensity (CI) had significantly positive effect on the RG, but technological uncertainty (TU) did not significantly affect the RG. For the CA, CI had significantly negative effect on the RG, but MU and TU did not significantly affect the RG.
