Evaluating Drinking Water Contamination in Post Disaster Scenario and its Effects on Human Health: A Case Study of District Mansehra, Pakistan

Abstract


Drinking water contamination and associated health risks remains a serious issue in the aftermath of earthquakes around the world. Similarly, earhquake that hit many parts of Pakistan on October 8, 2005, resulted in an outbreatk of waterborne diseases, thereby threatening human health in district Mansehra, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province. Hence, assessment of the drinking water and probable health threats became crucial to analyze the state of water consumed for drinking purpose in the affected areas. The present study assessed the state of water quality from selected 32 locations in union council Garhi-Habibullah. Tap water samples, collected at the consumer end, were subjected to microbiological contamination. It was revealed that out of total number of analyzed samples, only one sample was within the globally acceptable microbiological water quality parameters. Resultantly, the community suffered from numerous waterborne diseases, like diarrhea, vomiting and Jaundice. The main sources of water contamination found were structural, including point sources, like expired water storage tanks and passing of delivery network pipes through drains. Conclusively, the water quality in the study area was declared unacceptable for human consumption.
